Why AI Can’t get a grip on Soul in design.

Artificial Intelligence assisted design, and the threat to traditional design has been a hot but tired topic. AI has made significant strides in various fields, including design. AI algorithms are now capable of generating logos, layouts, and other visual elements with impressive accuracy and efficiency.

However, despite these advancements, there’s one thing that AI will never be able to grasp: the soul and craft of a designer.

At its core, AI operates based on data – lots and lots of it. It’s essentially a hoovered up, collection of over-democratised ideas, drawn from every possible context and rated by adoption or popularity, in order to generate a data-driven ‘fit’. While this approach can produce designs that meet certain criteria and trends, it falls way too short when it comes to capturing the x-factor essence of a brand and creating a truly memorable CI.

Experienced CI designers bring something unique to the table – the ability to analyse context and apply local wisdom, as well as an intuitive understanding of design principles honed over years of practice.

Here are a few reasons why AI can never match their ‘Soul’ touch:

  • Contextual Understanding: AI lacks the ability to truly understand the nuances of a brand’s identity, values, and target audience. Design is not just about creating visually appealing graphics; it’s about telling a story and evoking emotions that resonate with consumers. It’s heart stuff. Experienced designers have the insight to analyse the context surrounding a brand and translate it into impactful visuals.

  • Human Intuition: While AI can analyse data and identify patterns, it can’t replicate the human intuition that drives creative decision-making. Experienced designers have a sixth sense for what works and what doesn’t, allowing them to push boundaries and create innovative designs that stand out from the crowd. They understand that true memorability comes from taking risks and thinking outside the stereotypical box.

  • Craftsmanship: Design is as much about craftsmanship as it is about creativity. Experienced designers have honed their skills over years of practice, mastering techniques that can’t be replicated by algorithms alone. From typography and colour theory to composition and layout, they understand the subtleties that make a design truly exceptional.

  • Emotional Connection: Ultimately, great design is about forging an emotional connection with the audience. AI-generated designs may tick all the boxes in terms of aesthetics, but they often lack the soulfulness that comes from human creativity. Experienced designers have the ability to infuse their work with personality and authenticity, creating designs that resonate on a deeper level.

Sure… AI has its place in the world of design, but it can never replace the soulful touch of an experienced human designer. Design is inherently deeply human endeavour, driven by creativity, intuition, and a passion for storytelling. The best stories are the ones written between the lines. And AI just doesn’t go there.
